BEST GUIDE: How to Root Your Samsung Galaxy Note 5 (5.1.1)

Root is the power-user, with full administrative rights. Rooting your device means, granting yourself uid=0 (the administrator access). Once you have it, you can Flash custom ROMCustom recovery, and make use of the Xposed Modules to further enhance performance, look and features of your Android.

However, the drawback to rooting is that it will disable the OTA Updates, which means you will not be able to get updates automatically BUT you can always revert to the original firmware by searching and downloading it from “here

Before you continue with the steps listed in this guide; you acknowledge and accept that any damage to your phone caused by your attempts to root your phone is your own responsibility. If you don’t know what you’re doing; please research and If you do not feel comfortable with the steps, then DO NOT PROCEED. 

Prerequisites Before Continuing

a) Samsung Galaxy Note 5 running Android 5.1.1

b) Access to Laptop / Desktop

c) A USB cable to connect Phone to the Computer

d) Battery should be fully charged

Steps to Root Your Samsung Galaxy Note 5 (5.1.1)

First, check the Model # (Variant) of your Note 5. You can do this by going to Settings -> About Device -> Model Number. The variant will be displayed here.

Once you’ve got it, you’ll need to enable OEM Unlock. To do this, go to Settings -> About Device -> Software Info -> Build Number and repeatedly tap on it until the Development options appears enabled (usually needs to be pressed 7 times), when it does appear enabled go to Settings -> Developer Options -> OEM Unlock option. When you see it, tap Enable It. Some International Models, do not have this option which means that they come with an unlocked bootloader, so this step can be skipped.

Next is a bit of downloading the tools required, download the Custom Recovery for your Note 5 from here. Once on the website, do a CTRL + F to search quickly. There are three CR’s available:

GSM, DUOS and SPRINT. (DUOS is for DUAL SIM Phones, SPRINT is for Sprint Carrier Phones, and GSM for others). Once done, download Odin from here

Then download your Kernel by by choosing the one compatible with your Note 5 (depending on your model)

Put the kernel you downloaded in your phone’s Internal Memory. By connecting your phone using the USB Cable, and dragging it to into the Internal Memory via File Explorer. Once done, disconnect the cable.

Next extract Odin, you should see it as an .exe file, turn off the device and boot it into download mode by Holding Vol Down + Home + Power buttons together, once the device is booted you will see a warning screen, when you see it press the Volume Up button.

Run Odin, now connect your device to the computer using the USB cable, you should see a blue-highlighted box on the top left of ODIN program (which indicates that the device has connected to ODIN). If you do not see this box,  then you probably need to download the Samsung USB drivers for Windows, please do so from here

Click ap then browse to find the custom recovery file (should be in tar or md5 extension) which you downloaded earlier.

Flash the custom recovery by clicking the START button, Once flashing complete, disconnect device and long press Vol Down + Power. Once screen turns off, immediately press VOL UP+POWER+HOME to reboot to recovery mode manually. After it boots to the Recovery Mode (TWRP), You will need to press “Install“, search for the kernel zip (which you copied to the Internal Storage), choose it and swipe to confirm the flashing. After flashing your phone should be rebooted and rooted.
