Even with the rise of instant messaging apps, the short message service(SMS) still remains one of the most used communication method on our phones. Although regular texting via SMS isn’t that common nowadays, using short messages (also referred to as premium SMS) to pay for things like tram tickets or extra mobile data traffic is fairly common.
Android has a safety check that asks the user to confirm the sending of a short message that might result in extra charges. But if you’re in a rush, you might involuntarily tap “No” along with “Remember my choice”, which will instantly block all future attempts of sending a premium SMS.
Prior to the latest Nougat update, you could easily undo your wrong by unlocking short messages from Application Manager. The latest update brought some modifications on how premium SMS settings are being accessed, so users have every reason to be confused.
This article is meant to shed some light on this issue. We are going to cover the steps of unlocking short messages before and after the latest Nougat update.
Method 1: Before update
- Go to Settings > Application manager and select All.
- Scroll down and select Messaging.
- Scroll down and select Permissions.
- Look for a tab called Premium SMS service, tap on it and set it to either Allow all or Ask.

Method 2: After Nougat Update
- Go to Settings > Applications.
- Tap the “More” menu and select Special access.

- Tap on Premium SMS services and select Message service.
- If you blocked the short messages yourself, this setting will already be set to “Never allow”. Change it to Ask or Always allow.

Note: If you still need to block some premium SMS services, the best option for you is to set it to “Ask”.
